The superior party leaders from UP who met AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry in Delhi Saturday to confer the approach for the polls also insisted that a chief ministerial aspirant should be named. “The grade and folder of the party needs Congress to race the elections on its own,” former Union minister R P N Singh said after the deliberations. While no such conversation was formally on the schedule, in view of party’s presentation in the Bihar elections, some leaders hoisted the issue of forming a Grand Alliance in UP. However, most of the seniors present redundant the idea saying that it will only fade the party and preserved that the political situation of the two states cannot be contrasted.

“The senior leaders have out exactly abandoned the idea of an alliance in UP. Majority of them were of the vision that for party’s renewal, we should go unaided in the state,” said Congress state president Nirmal Khatri. “Some senior leaders have also come forward to take liability and have said that they would start moving in the districts to make stronger the party,” he added.

In addition to Khatri, more than 20 elder leaders from the state plus ex- Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Mohsina Kidwai, Jitin Prasada took part in the meeting. They required the party to draw up an violent campaigning programme ahead of the Assembly polls and an determined action plan to take UP on the fast track.

Congress has been out of authority in the state since 1989 in the wake of the Mandir and Mandal topics that saw it getting more and more marginalised. Some leaders said that protrusion of a chief ministerial candidate would advantage the party. “Leaders were of the sight that Congress has unsuccessful to plan a face in UP for a long time. While aiming (SP chief) Mulayam Singhjh Yadav or (BSP supremo) Mayawati, party does not have any face to oppose them. Most leaders thus stipulated that this is the time Congress should announce its chief ministerial candidate,” said a senior leader, who was part of the meeting.
